How
to register business or business name
-
You need to register
your business with the Companies Branch
of the Ministry of Consumer and Business
Services. If you are starting a business
in Nova Scotia, you need to register your
business with the Nova Scotia Registry Of
Joint Stock Companies. If you are starting
a business in BC, you need to register your
business with the Corporate Registry. In
all cases, the first step is to choose and
register a business name, a process that
often requires a name search. After that,
it's a matter of filling out the appropriate
forms (and paying the appropriate fees)
to register your business. This
link is for businesses starting in Ontario,
however, visit later for other provinces
business procedure.
Choose
Business Name
- Choosing
the right name for your business is an important
decision. You want a name that will draw
potential customers, help clients identify
your company and build your business image.
Name
Search -
Business name registration is no guarantee
of exclusivity. (Business name protection
is provided by a trademark, not by name
registration.) The Business Names Act doesn't
prohibit the registration of identical names,
so you could register a business name that
another company is already using. If you
do, or if you register a name that's confusingly
similar, a lawsuit could result so it's
a good idea to conduct a name search to
see if anyone else is using the business
name you want.
